Production in construction up by 0.3% in euro area

In July 2018 compared with June 2018, seasonally adjusted production in the construction sector increased by 0.3% in the euro area (EA19) and by 0.4% in the EU28, according to first estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In June 2018, production in construction grew by 0.7% in the euro area and by 1.0% in the EU28.

In July 2018 compared with July 2017, production in construction increased by 2.6% in the euro area and by 3.9% in the EU28.

Monthly comparison by construction sector and by Member State

The increase of 0.3% in production in construction in the euro area in July 2018, compared with June 2018, is due to building construction rising by 1.9%, while civil engineering fell by 4.4%.

In the EU28, the increase of 0.4% is due to building construction rising by 1.7%, while civil engineering fell by 3.9%.

Among Member States for which data are available, the highest increases in production in construction were recorded in Slovenia (+7.0%), Hungary (+4.6%) and Slovakia (+3.8%). The largest decreases were observed in Romania (-9.1%), France (-1.8%) and Poland (-1.0%).

Annual comparison by construction sector and by Member State

The increase of 2.6% in production in construction in the euro area in July 2018, compared with July 2017, is due to building construction rising by 4.0%, while civil engineering fell by 1.6%.

In the EU28, the increase of 3.9% is due to building construction rising by 4.3% and civil engineering by 2.1%.

Among Member States for which data are available, the highest increases in production in construction were recorded in Hungary (+38.0%), Slovenia (+26.3%) and Poland (+16.6%). Decreases were observed in Romania (-17.4%) and Spain (-4.1%).
