Western US sawmills produce 7.015 bbf of softwood lumber in first six months of 2017

Western U.S. sawmills produced 7.015 billion board ft. (bbf) of softwood lumber in the first six months of 2017, an increase of 1.1% from 6.939 bbf a year earlier, according to the latest data from the Western Wood Products Assn. (WWPA) of Portland, Oregon.

Coastal mills accounted for 4.305 bbf of the six-month total, up 1.8% from 4.229 bbf last year, while inland mills produced 2.450 bbf, up 1.4% from 2.416 bbf in the first half of 2016. California redwood production fell by 11.6% to 260 million board ft. (mmbf) from 294 mmbf.

Production in the month of June by Western U.S. sawmills was 1.257 bbf, a year-over-year gain of 4.2% from 1.206 bbf a year earlier, and up 1.4% from May’s output of 1.240 bbf.

Coastal mills accounted for 766 mmbf of June’s production volume, a year-over-year increase of 3.5% from 740 mmbf, and level with the previous month’s output of 767 mmbf. Inland mills in June contributed 438 mmbf, an increase of 4.7% from 418 mmbf in June 2016, and up 4.2% from 420 mmbf in May 2017.

California redwood production in June was 52 mmbf, a drop of 11.1% from last year’s 47 mmbf, and down 1.2% from 53 mmbf in May 2017.

Western softwood lumber inventories in June were down 2.6% from 1.173 bbf last year to 1.142 bbf.

Production as a percent of practical capacity was 83% in June, up from 82% in May and from 81% in June last year. The average production as a percent of practical capacity for the six months to June was 80%, down from 81% in the first half of 2016.
