The information was disclosed by Anatoly Tyomkin, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources of RF, at the international Forest Forum in Saint-Petersburg, according to www.rwt.ru and www.forest.ru.
He highlighted that the area will be allocated for management by the Chinese party “on firm guarantee” of the construction of a pulp&paper mill. Valery Roschupkin, head of the Federal Agency for Forestry, noted that the Russian government offered the Chinese State Forestry Administration to build such a mill in Tyumen or Tomsk region. “These regions enjoy huge timber stocks and are located far from the state border, which means that the Chinese will have less opportunities to transport round timber to China; they will be forced to focus on timber processing, providing jobs for Russian citizens and replenishing the Russian budget”, said Valery Roschupkin. He also added that allocating a 1mln ha forested land to the Chinese party is an attempt to manage underused forest resources and attract investments to the national forest industry.
