Germany: Building permits increase 1.8% in January-May 2018

From January to May 2018, the construction of a total of 139,600 apartments was approved in Germany. This includes all permits for construction of newly built and existing residential and non-residential buildings. As the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) further informs, the 1.8% or 2,500 building permits for apartments were more than in the same period of the previous year. Excluding housing in dormitories, the number of building permits increased by 3.8%.

In the first five months of 2018, the number of building permits for new apartment blocks has risen by 8.3%. By contrast, the number of new construction permits for new family houses has fallen by 2.1% and for new two-family houses by 2.3%. The number of new housing permits for dormitories has fallen sharply (-30.4%).

The number of dwellings due to approved conversion and extension work on existing buildings fell by 0.9% in the first five months of 2018 compared to the same period of the previous year.

The converted space of the approved new non-residential buildings increased by 9.1 million m3 from January to May 2018 compared to the same period of the previous year to 90.1 million m3 (+ 11.2%). The increase was attributable to both the public builders (+2.0 million m3 and + 31.9%) and the non-public builders (+7.0 million m3 and + 9.4%).
