From January to May 2014, the European Union countries lumber shipments to Japan have significantly fallen. As Japan is currently expanding its own lumber production, its need for imports is proportionally decreasing. Already, the Japanese Forestry Agency has announced for this year a 5% increase in Japan's lumber production.

Thus, according to the latest Eurostat statistics, in the first five months of this year the EU countries have exported in value almost 30% less softwood lumber to Japan (down to EUR 283 million). Shipments are more than EUR 100 million lower than in the same period of 2013. Alone in May, deliveries have dropped by 40% giving a bad signal for the upcoming period.

Finnish and Swedish sawmills exported less softwood lumber to Japan by 20%, but a more significant decline was registered in Romanian and Austrian deliveries. In the first five months, Romanian exports decreased -41% (down to EUR 49 million), while those from Austria by -42% (EUR 37 million). German shipments went down -15% to a value of EUR 12,5 million.
